Muktangan(an initiative of Paragon Charitable Trust),is an educational program that offers alternatives to orthodox educational practices in India.Designed to avoid many of the pitfalls of the mainstream educational system:the Muktangan educational model offers a sustainable example of low-cost, high-quality English-medium education,for the economically deprived sections of society.

Currently consisting of two balwadis (kindergarten) and a primary school (situated in municipal school buildings), Muktanagan is a community based education model, founded on a unique and innovative teacher - training program.

The Muktangan teacher-training program is an in-school integrated training facility that draws young women from the local community and gives them intensive training to become teachers.This community investment enables these women to have a career in teaching, instruction in the Muktangan pedagogy, and most importantly allows Muktangan schools to maintain a practical and favourable student -teacher ratio. The Muktangan Model has received widespread acclaim from educationalist, as a low-cost educational model, and is expanding each year with the Worli school, and outreach to implement the program in other NGOs.

 
  Atma Mumbai has partnered with Muktangan since February 2006, and will work together towards the following goals until April 2008:  
 
MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING 2007
  • Development of an organizational overview, including a plan for a long-term critical path for organizations expansion, succession planning, for future sustainability. Including key roles and responsibilities of trustee, board and operating staff.
  • Develop a fundraising strategy and plan for organization, defining fundraising responsibility, including expansion plans and corpus development.
  • Liaise and overseas key partnership between Muktangan and a foreign University. Play a key role in developing a research and development process for the organization, including documentation of Muktangan's pedagogy and model, analysis and publication.
  • Professional development sessions for Muktangan staff through Atma Mumbai workshops.
  • Engaging educational volunteers to work directly with the school.
  • Facilitate in opening dialogue with other organizations working in the same field, and the incorporation of outreach program development for Muktangan's programs.
  • Facilitating development of internationally funded programs through Atma's networks and contacts.
